Cautionary Distances
Longleaf Review, Spring 2019

TWO WINTERS LONGA novel-in-progress of literary fiction, 'Two Winters Long' is at the surface the story about a theft of paintings and their attempted recovery while more deeply, seeks to explore the interiority of relationships we hold among ourselves and others, the slipperiness of identity between the public and private self, and how these themes are often a product of the environments we inhabit. Very much a character driven novel, I hope to invite the reader to consider the malleability of self and the struggle to move beyond how we are perceived - artist, laborer, criminal, solitary, deceitful.Noah spends his summers painting in his studio and winters working as a chairlift attendant at a local ski resort. A once successful painter struggling with artist’s block, Noah emerges from dormancy to create a collection of work inspired by a series of candid photographs taken of his partner, Callie, who is gradually coming to reveal her truer self. The resulting paintings, a blur of colors veiled in meaning, go missing after an apparent studio break in - and this followed by little progress made in the investigation by the local sheriff. As both Noah and Callie struggle in the aftermath of the theft, a small clue will lead them to the person responsible for the disappearance of artwork and send Callie alone on a vengeful pursuit to find and bring their return.

TECHNIQUES FOR BREATHING UNDERWATERCompleted in 2025, 'Techniques for Breathing Underwater' is a collection of 16 stories whose characters and relationships are often fractured, imperfect, and at odds with the worlds they inhabit. In 'Cautionary Distances', a couple finds themselves growing apart and searching for reconciliation on the ice of a frozen lake. 'Husk' and 'Empty Vessels' are the hopefulness of youth versus the slow, accumulating weight of adulthood. In 'Sucking Wind', 'purity purity, eeh', and "An Erasure'. the impacts of climate change and war have dire consequences on our landscapes and those inhabiting them. Love is tenuous, fleeting, and recalled in 'The Hand She Bites Is Tender', 'Shallows', and 'Departures'. In 'A Righteous Divine', an unnamed narrator flees home only to find a more raw and sinister world awaiting. These and others are stories of suffocation, of drownings, and our attempts at breaking the surface of everyday living.
